Eliza Hamilton

Eliza was a the wife of Alexander Hamilton, the first Treasury Secretary.  She spoke on behalf of John Laurens, a statesman during the Revolutionary War who is best known for his criticism of slavery and efforts to help recruit slaves to fight for their freedom as U.S. soldiers. Eliza was also active in charitable organizations, holding positions in the New York Orphan Asylum Society and founded orphanages in New York City and Washington, D.C. She was also known to take homeless children into her own home.
