Captain Jonathan Walker

Johnathan Walker, aka "The Man with the Branded Hand," was an American reformer who became a national hero in 1844 when he was tried and sentenced as a slave stealer following his attempt to help seven runaway slaves find freedom. A white man who had long been opposed to slavery, Walker was known for his unusual determination to treat slaves and free blacks with respect. In 1844 he attempted to sail seven black men to their freedom from Florida to the Bahamas, but was caught and convicted of aiding in the escape of slaves. He was branded on his hand by the  United States Government  with the markings S.S. for "Slave Stealer."
